Have questions about the FEES process?

Here are the steps involved:

  1. Your Speech-Language Pathologist at your facility will contact the doctor if there is a complaint/concern of a swallowing problem.

  2. The Medical Doctor will write an order for a FEES exam and a certified Speech-Language Pathologist/Endoscopist (SLP)  from Mississippi Dysphagia Specialists (MDS)  will travel to your facility. (Nursing home, hospital, rehabilitation center, etc).

  3. Prior to passing the flexible endoscope, the SLP will set up the exam wherever is convenient for you such as at bedside, living room or dining room.

  4. The scope will be inserted through the nares and swallow function will be viewed transnasally. The scope has a camera on the end and will provide immediate feedback onto the SLP’s laptop

  5. The SLP will offer a variety of consistencies of foods and liquids dyed with the color green.

  6. Once the swallow study has been completed, the SLP will go over results with the staff and family. The report with a dysphagia diagnosis and appropriate treatment recommendations will be available within 24 hours with the staff and family. The report with a dysphagia diagnosis and appropriate treatment recommendations will be available within 24 hours.
